School Lunches

Our school lunch team work hard to provide a choice of nutritional lunches for our hard working children. All of the meals are prepared and cooked in the school kitchen using fresh ingredients. We would love every child in school to have a school lunch. At the moment all children in Reception and Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) are entitled to a free school lunch. These are known as Universal Free School Meals.  It is recommended that you still apply if you receive universal credit, as this may unlock extra benefits e.g. pupil premium - this is extra funding that goes directly to school to support your child's education.  It also may grant your child eligibility to Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programmes, which provides free meals and activities through the holidays.

From 4th November 2025:-

The cost of a school meal is £2.55 per day / £12.75 per week.

Nursery lunches are £2.35 per day / £11.75 per week.

From September 2026:-

The cost of a school meal is £2.66 per day / £13.30 per week.

FREE SCHOOL MEALS (FSM) – CHANGE OF ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

From the start of the 2026 to 2027 academic year, all children from households in receipt of Universal Credit will be entitled to receive a free school meal.

There will be 2 categories of benefits-based free school meals:

  • Targeted FSM, which continues to be based on the existing threshold, covering pupils who are in households in receipt of Universal Credit with annual household earnings of £7,400 or less.

  • Expanded FSM, a new category covering pupils who do not qualify for targeted FSM, but who are in households receiving Universal Credit.

Ending transitional protections

Transitional protections for free school meals have been in effect since 1 April 2018. This has meant that pupils becoming eligible for free meals under the benefits-based criteria have retained their entitlement, even if their household circumstances have changed.

Transitional protections apply until the end of the 2025 to 2026 academic year. All pupils eligible for free school meals under the benefits-based criteria before the end of the 2025 to 2026 academic year should continue to receive this entitlement until the end of the 2025/2026 academic year.

From the start of the 2026 to 2027 academic year, transitional protections for free school meals will end. Households must meet the FSM eligibility criteria from the start of the 2026 to 2027 academic year to continue receiving provision.

Rechecking eligibility

Going forward FSM eligibility will be monitored on an ongoing basis, through annual rechecks.

Rechecks will confirm that pupils in receipt of FSM continue to meet the eligibility criteria and the category of eligibility they fall under (either targeted or expanded).

Checks will be completed ahead of the start of the 2026 to 2027 academic year. This is to allow all pupils to be ready to receive FSM from the start of the autumn term.
